"I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)"

... By Daniel Kreps
QuoteSixteen years after Daryl Hall sold "significant interest" of duo's music to publishing firm Primary Wave, he's trying to prevent longtime partner John Oates from doing the same.

Days after Daryl Hall filed a restraining order against his longtime musical partner John Oates, details about the legal rift between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted duo have emerged.

When the restraining order was filed on November 17 to a Nashville judge, the dispute itself was sealed, noting only that the dispute pertained to "Contract/Debt." However, on Wednesday, the Nashville chancery court judge allowed for some documents to be unsealed, revealing the heart of the battle: Hall is trying to prevent Oates from selling his shares in the duo's joint venture to music publishing firm Primary Wave.

According to the Associated Press, Oates signed a letter of intent to sell his half of the duo's business venture — dubbed Whole Oats Enterprises — to Primary Wave; by allowing the firm to see the duo's confidential business agreement, Hall alleges that was "an indisputable breach of contract," and thus filed the restraining order to stop Oates and Primary Wave from further pursuing a deal.

General Discussion / Sixto Rodriguez
July 25, 2023, 01:48:48 PM
... how would you feel about discovering that you were a musical superstar for decades and didn't know anything about it and that you were not receiving any royalties on over 1/2 million album sales? Lets meet Sixto Rodriguez who worked construction for most of his life but in his later years discovered his fame and the millions of dollars he was owed.

From Wikipedia
QuoteSixto Diaz Rodriguez (born July 10, 1942), known professionally as Rodriguez, is an American singer-songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. Though his career was initially met with little fanfare in the United States, he found success in South Africa, Australia (touring the country twice in his earlier career), and New Zealand. Unbeknownst to him for decades, his music was extremely successful and influential in South Africa, where he is believed to have sold more records than Elvis Presley, as well as other countries in southern Africa. Information about him was scarce, and it was incorrectly rumored there that he had committed suicide shortly after releasing his second album.

In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to find and contact Rodriguez, which led to an unexpected revival of his musical career. This was told in the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary film Searching for Sugar Man and helped give Rodriguez a measure of fame in his home country. In May 2013, Rodriguez received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from his alma mater, Wayne State University, in Detroit

Cassette Tape Inventor Died - Ep. 7.353

Lou Ottens, who invented the cassette tape and pioneered the CD, dies
This from the LA Times -  By Associated Press

Lou Ottens, the Dutch inventor who pioneered the compact disc and invented the cassette tape — the medium of choice for millions of homemade mix tapes — has died at a care facility in the Netherlands.

Ottens died March 6 at 94, the Dutch electronic conglomerate Philips announced.

A structural engineer who trained at the prestigious Technical University in Delft, he joined Philips in 1952 and was head of the company's product development department when he began work on an alternative for existing tape recorders with their cumbersome large spools of tape.

His goal was simple: making tapes and their players far more portable and easier to use.

"During the development of the cassette tape, in the early 1960s, he had a wooden block made that fit exactly in his coat pocket," said Olga Coolen, director of the Philips Museum in the southern city of Eindhoven. "This was how big the first compact cassette was to be, making it a lot handier than the bulky tape recorders in use at the time."

Acoustic Guitar / Guitar Builds I've seen.
March 28, 2015, 01:51:18 PM
My main hobby is woodworking and woodturning and so I frequent several woodworking/turning forums and quite often read topics posted by folks who build guitars in their home shops.

Thought that some here on Guitarist Guild might enjoy this one:
