WARNING!

If you are using Cubase DO NOT install this upgrade UNLESS you select the default location for the VST3. If you don't this could happen: -

I installed this yesterday after using Cubase in the morning. After installation Cubase crashes on opening reporting a fatal error.

Reaper seems to be OK, as does Cakewalk. But trying to run Amplitube produces an error message saying that Amplitube has failed to load - looks like a memory address error (8000ffff)

General Discussion / Re: RiffStation for free

Apparently RiffStation is now FREE. https://pro.riffstation.com/download/

So it would seem. It's still not very reliable, in that it frequently gets chords wrong, but it is useful for transposing without having to use a DAW.

I read the article - potential infractions include 'controlled sales to parts of a country' - if that's the case then Gibson are definitely guilty, they've been taking product away from outlets with lower sales volumes for years, as well as other things - even Thomann was blacklisted at one time because Gibson didn't like their LP copies. My local music store is one they have refused to supply - it's all Fender and the odd Ibanez now. Not a Gibson or Epi anywhere to be seen.

That was lovely Dan - great job.

General Discussion / Gibson Enters Chapter 11
May 03, 2018, 06:47:25 AM
Message on Farcebook today:

Dear Friends:

Yesterday, we made a significant announcement that marks the next phase of Gibson's long and storied history. We are re-focusing the Company on the manufacturing of world-class, iconic musical instruments and the continued development of the global Gibson brand, by reorganizing around its core businesses in the Musical Instruments segment. Gibson has reached a Restructuring Support Agreement with its majority stakeholders that clears the way for the continued financing and operations of the musical instruments business.

To implement the agreement, the Company filed today to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in Wilmington, Delaware. This will allow our Company to continue to design, build, sell and manufacture Gibson's legendary guitars and instruments without interruption.

We are making every precaution to ensure normal operations for our valued customers. You will very likely not notice any change at all. There will be no change to inventory, pricing or quality of our guitars, musical instruments and Pro Audio. We intend to focus the same amount of time, money and energy in designing and building the best guitars, instruments and Pro Audio equipment that Gibson is known for.

As the Company moves through this process, which we will work to conclude as quickly as possible, there are several important facts you should know and understand about the Chapter 11 process:

• Gibson Brands is not going out of business. The legal process is being used to implement a reorganization of the Musical Instruments division, not liquidation.
• The filings do not change pricing, inventory, ordering or delivery timing of our guitars, musical instruments and Pro Audio equipment.
• There will be no change to the quality of service and support our customers have come to expect from us.
• There will be no changes to our warranty and customer service policies.

While we believe we have put all the right pieces in place to support normal business operations, this announcement may raise questions for you. Please be assured that our commitment to quality products, warranties and customer-service policies are not changing.

Sincerely,

Henry Juszkiewicz
Chairman and CEO of Gibson Brands

Cakewalk / Re: The end for Cakewalk / Sonar

There is also Session Drummer included and, of course, MT Power also works with it. I already had Addicitive Drums 2 and Groove Agent 4, so I've got loads of drum options.

You can find the instruments by right clicking anywhere empty in the track bar and choosing 'insert instrument' then just navigate to the one you want. I am having some conceptual difficulty with the way it handles MIDI tracks. It seems to be necessary to create additional busses to get anything out. But if you choose 'insert instrument' the VST instrument output is routed to the main buss. I do like the SI Drum VST though; sounds OK and very easy to use, even has a step sequencer built in.

I watched the tutorial on drum maps 'made easy' - what a nightmare! In Cubase with Groove Agent you just click the 'make drum map' button :)

Cakewalk / Re: The end for Cakewalk / Sonar

The bits that are missing are 3rd party instruments (the main one being Addictive Drums) and a few plugins - but it is the platinum version, just can't include other people's stuff without licences.

My bad Mick, forgot to mention about turning off the autostart feature.

I have noticed that there are a few things missing from the suite that was with the trial of the Sonar package that I tried a while back - but it still looks very well specified. Will play some more when the school holidays are over and I have a bit more time to myself.

Just downloading it now for the hell of it.

Catches are Windows doesn't like the file source for the downloader - but I did it anyway, and when you get to download it you are immediately taken to a cookie jar page - ignore it if you like - if I like the revised version I will make a donation, if I don't I'll just uninstall it and forget about it. The other thing is that you have to sign up to Bandlab - a music sharing service - again, no skin off one's nose to do so, you don't have to use it.

I'll let you now how it goes.

Glad you liked it Mick - there are a few more where that one came from, when I finally get around to editing the audio/video. Alas there will be no Worfstock 2018, but we've already set the date for 2019 :)

Mmm, actually it's 35 banks of 4 user patches, rather more than enough. Really enjoying playing with it.

Half way through the manual and have played with some of the presets. Although it's an old machine it's built like a tank and has a huge array of options. Sounds really good through the Mustang with the output option set to 'combo'. None of the usual Mustang high frequency bias is evident, lovely and smooth. 'Only' 35 user patches, but the Katana has just 10, and that is more than enough. I am extremely pleased with it so far.

No USB, but really I never use pedals to record directly anyway. Also has no xlr balanced outs, but this is not an issue for me either.

Feeling quite pleased with myself - look what I picked up from the second hand shop for £60 this morning:

Just reading the manual. Hours of potential fun methinks

Amplifiers / Re: Marshall Origin Amps
March 14, 2018, 09:34:17 AM
OK, 8 hours running at '5' on the volume control, mix of guitar loops and random music and the results are in.

I recorded the amp with the H1 before and after playing the same tunes, one on setting 22 (65 twin with reverb), and one on a JCM800 type of sound I set up myself. I loaded the audio into Reaper and used the SPAN spectrum analyser to see what was going on.

In short, yes, the frequency range did become a little more evenly distributed and even slightly extended at the low end - but, and it is a big but, the peaks remained unchanged in the 800hz and 2-4khz ranges, which means that the sound is still painfully toppy.

I also tried the amp by disconnecting the speaker and running through a 100w passive wedge monitor loaded with a Fane full range 12" driver. Still uncomfortably shrill. This monitor has been used at hundreds of gigs, often flat out, so it's definitely run in.

Conclusion: the power stage of the Mustang 3 is seriously biased to higher frequencies, slightly disguised by the Q around the 800hz which adds some high middle, but lacking in low end response. Unforgivable really  >:(

So I won't bother replacing the driver, but will use the amp with a pre-amp/multi FX pedal set to deaden the nasty spikiness in the sound (I use the 'empty' preset available from Fuse when running pedals through it), and reset all the amp models to take out as much of the overbearing high end as possible without losing the brightness on the Fender models.

Work for another day!
