Your Recordings / From Halls of Darkness...
September 16, 2014, 02:31:34 AM
Been sitting around doing lots of nothing lately, threw my back out a few days ago and chair bound.  Sat here tonight going through some old stuff, and decided Akasha shouldn't have to be the only one posting something up.

This one is from a challenge last year.  The challenge was to write something about the 'dark one'.  You know, the guy in charge of the pit.

By the way, this lost the challenge by a mile, but here it is anyway...

General Discussion / A guitar player challenge...
September 02, 2014, 12:24:36 AM
We don't really have a board for challenges or collabs here yet, so I'm putting this here.

I did this piece about 5 years ago as a challenge.  A few people have tried to play with it over the years, but no one has ever finished the piece.  I'd almost forgotten about it till coming across it this evening.

I created this piece specifically for a guitar player to add some freestyle to it.  Although guitar could be added anywhere, the sections with only drums were left open to be filled by someone.  And the entire ending was left wide open for the finish.  The section starting at 1:10 is meant to be a call/response thing.

The challenge is to lay down a guitar track that completes the piece.  Though not mandatory, I would expect the added track to be a little 'heavier' than the rest of the piece.  Make it scream.  The guitar track doesn't have to run all the way to the end of this, I just left plenty of room for a big finish and tail.

No prizes for this challenge, though it would be a good one for a prize.  Nothing but the pure satisfaction of doing it.

If you're into mixing, feel free.  If not, post up the track and I'll do the mixing.

So whatdya say?  This is Guitarist Guild, let's hear some guitar...  :D

General Discussion / This place needs a theme song...
August 31, 2014, 02:07:07 PM
A couple months ago I mentioned to Mick that this place really needs its own theme song.  Mick said to go for it.  So I did.  To date, I've written three of them.  Because of a lot of "life happens" things over the last couple months (me and everybody else) I've been having trouble getting music/musicians together to get a tune done for any of them.

I kept thinking that maybe I could talk some of the fine players/singers here into a collab, but that's been a hard sell so far.  So, I finally decided to put one up here in the hopes of getting some interest going.  Before you ask, I did not play this (though I wish I had, but can't play anymore) - loops/samples/etc.  I'm down to stealing other peoples' work.  ::)

It would be cool to have people from the site here do this one for real - direct cover or remake, or I can post other lyrics I've written and see where that goes as a collab.  If there's interest.  Either way, GG needs a kick butt theme song, so me being me I'll just keep poking and prodding till we get one going.

Meantime, I'm hoping this might peak some interest.  Musicians and a singer.  I'm not putting this out as any kind of proposed final theme piece, this is just to get attention and hopefully something started.

Quick and dirty...

Sometimes I write songs for me, and sometimes I write songs to see where somebody else can take them.

I thought it might be interesting to see where anyone here could take a couple songs I've had on the shelf for a while.  So, here they are.  Let's see what you musicians can do with them.  Therein lies the challenge, I guess.

The first one likely leans toward country, but it's always interesting to see how other people see a song.  So without further ado, I call this one "Waiting For The Fall".

Sunlight falls across my face
And I rise to face the dawn
Behind me lies forever
The road ahead seems way too long

It took a long, long time to get this far
But it seems like yesterday
That I realized how short life is
And the price we have to pay

I was grown before I knew it
My youth had passed me by
I raised myself a family
Neath a burning western sky

It was a hard life, it took it's toll on me
But that's a long time in the past
And now I'm on this road alone
The time has gone so fast

------break

Thinking back on all the years
Some good times, and some I don't recall
I feel I don't have long to go
I'm worn out, and I'm just waiting for the fall

Nothing lasts forever, you turn around the time is gone
And soon you're left wondering, if you will face another dawn
I feel I don't have long to go, it's my time, but I don't mind at all
I'm worn out, and I'm just waiting for the fall

Worn out, and just waiting for the fall

DAWs / Your favorite DAW?
June 07, 2014, 12:01:05 PM
I thought it would be interesting to hear what your favorite DAW is, and why.  Other than the fact that it's just always interesting to know what people are using, sometimes it's helpful to those who are still looking for their 'perfect' DAW to hear what someone else is using and why it works best for them.

I used to own and use Pro Tools way, way back when, but for my purposes it just wasn't worth the cost.  I'm not saying the software isn't worth the asking price, it just wasn't for me.

I picked up a copy of Sony's Acid when it first came out, and for a few years that was my favorite (and primary) DAW.  And even though it hasn't been updated in ages, I still like and use Acid Pro 7 for a number of things.  But, I'm one of those people who like variety, and firmly believe that the guy who dies with the most DAWs wins.  ;D

These days I have a number of DAWs (or DAW wannabes) on my audio system.  In part because each one might have its own particular feature or feature set that I like, and in part to be compatible with other people for projects.  My primary go-to DAW at this point is Reaper, simply because it does almost anything I want it to, does it well, and has a very small footprint (very light on system resources).

Right up there with Reaper, though, is Reason from Propellerhead.  Reason not only does a great job of recording and mixing, but it's also - in my opinion - the best synth instrument system out there.  Not being able to play much anymore because of physical limitations (I'm old and broken now), I really like being able to use synth and sampled instruments on my Evolution keyboard.  One hand, a good keyboard, and Reason, and you can do some pretty cool stuff.

I also still use Acid Pro for some things, but I think it's more out of a sense of nostalgia.  Though it still does certain things quite well.

Some of the others I bring up once every blue moon just to check for updates, unless I need to use them to access someone's project file.  Sonar, Ableton, MixCraft, and a few others.  Not at all well versed in them, though.

Anyway, I could never give up Reason, but if I had to pick just one DAW at this point for recording and mixing, it would have to be Reaper.

I know some people use a particular product because it was the first one they purchased, and once they learned it they just stuck with it.  And some people might have gotten their software with a hardware purchase and stuck with that for the same reason.  So what do you use, and why?  And how did you first start using it?

Your Recordings / Feeling a little 'rockish'...
May 20, 2014, 05:54:09 PM
Few months ago there was a little challenge to write a song about your favorite music genre.  Was short on time at the time, but wanted to get one in.  Came up with this.  Guess it's easy to tell what my favorite genre is.  :D

Not me on guitar, sadly...

Show Off Your Cover Songs / And one for Boris...
May 20, 2014, 01:28:16 AM
This one was done for a challenge 3-4 years ago.  I'm told it doesn't sound like me, but I guess that was the point.  Another fun little thing from back in the day...

I was listening again to Akasha's great Johnny Cash tribute cover, and remembered that (being a fan) I'd done a couple Johnny covers a while back.  This was an old favorite from back then.  Nothing fancy, but it was fun...

A little something I did a month or two ago.  Normally I wouldn't post this, since it's not a true cover, but this being primarily a guitar site I thought about it while cruising through all the fine music here and decided to throw it up.

An old, old favorite of mine that I rewrote the lyrics for.  Just another thought that came up one late night.  I can't, of course, deliver it like Kris or Sammi, but I ended up liking it...

Introduce Yourself / Just saying howdy...
May 13, 2014, 06:18:59 PM
Go by Joom.  Just an old rocker from way back - though I enjoy most genres.

I don't play much anymore, but I still enjoy being involved in and around music production.  Also been known to write a few lyrics now and then.

Looks like a nice place to hang out...
