Your Recordings / How to unite a collection of songs
September 05, 2014, 09:15:15 PM
This is something I'm working on. The upcoming LGL album is written as a 'concept' album. Tunes reappear throughout the entire album, spread across the tracks. This has freed up the guitar to have a different character, not just for each song, but for each and every phrase. It doesn't sound disjointed, because the whole thing is unified by the writing. Watch this space...

Electric Guitar / Re: Epiphone LP or Vintage V100?
August 17, 2014, 08:27:23 PM
I've had a few students using the Vintage, including adults who could easily afford an Epiphone. I have a lovely Epi LP, and it's my pride and joy!! Having said that, it doesn't produce every sound I'm looking for... Also, the Vintages are great, affordable instruments which deserve to be taken seriously-they certainly encourage more new players to get started. I'd encourage anyone to try one!!   8)

General Discussion / Re: When to record guitar parts
August 16, 2014, 10:37:49 PM
Cheers! I also think that it might contrast well with other guitar lines which are keyboard-led, by being more call and response derived... I'll keep on trying new ways of doing things!! 8)

General Discussion / When to record guitar parts
August 16, 2014, 08:19:19 PM
Having always recorded all instruments before vocals, on the new LGL album I've saved the guitar parts until the end. This is a revelation, because guitar lines can really 'answer' or 'fit in' much more successfully. They are also played differently because the vocals are on while recording the guitar. As they say, it's a learning curve...

General Discussion / Guitar scales
July 22, 2014, 11:00:21 PM
Having recorded almost everything for the second LGL album, I'm now gearing up for the recording of the guitar parts!! Think I'll spend the summer refreshing scales-the majors and minors, in the 5 shapes. This is THE way to become relaxed with the fretboard, and it makes the learning of parts so much easier...   ???

After a tense recording session today, the keyboards for the second LGL album are (more or less...) finished!!

Promote You, or your band / Looking-Glass Lantern
June 21, 2014, 08:08:50 PM

Looking-Glass Lantern was conceived by classically-trained multi-instrumentalist Graham Dunnington as a musical project fusing 'classic' progressive rock with the atmosphere of Victorian England. The result is a musical style of great character and charm. Whilst being firmly grounded in the world of progressive rock, the influence of classical music is never far away, and fans of longer pieces and story-telling may find something of interest in the songs - we hope so.
