Guitar strings. How often should you change them?

To be honest I'm one of those people who pick up a guitar as and when I feel like it,  So they only get played occasionally.  So the question is, even though they don't get played much, should the strings be replaced as often as someone who plays the guitar on a regular basis?

Am I missing out on some serious tone etc.

Bass strings I change when they start to sound dull. When I was gigging it was once every few months, but that was mainly to avoid breakages.

Guitar strings usually once a year, because I play the basses more often.

I think that the most important factor in prolonging string life is keeping them clean - I wipe down the strings and neck after every play to keep sweat at bay.

What I'm saying is there is no fixed rule, change them when you feel it's a good idea. Like when they won't hold tuning or sound or feel wrong.
