When buying a electric bass, you have a choice of passive or active pickups. What's your preference, and why

Good pint on the batteries,  :doh:  I've no idea how long they last.  Can you use rechargeable ones I wonder?  I'm guessing the current drain is fairly minimal in this kind of setup though.
