A little challenge - or just seeing what happens...
« on: July 11, 2014, 02:53:11 AM »
Sometimes I write songs for me, and sometimes I write songs to see where somebody else can take them.

I thought it might be interesting to see where anyone here could take a couple songs I've had on the shelf for a while.  So, here they are.  Let's see what you musicians can do with them.  Therein lies the challenge, I guess.

The first one likely leans toward country, but it's always interesting to see how other people see a song.  So without further ado, I call this one "Waiting For The Fall".

Sunlight falls across my face
And I rise to face the dawn
Behind me lies forever
The road ahead seems way too long

It took a long, long time to get this far
But it seems like yesterday
That I realized how short life is
And the price we have to pay

I was grown before I knew it
My youth had passed me by
I raised myself a family
Neath a burning western sky

It was a hard life, it took it's toll on me
But that's a long time in the past
And now I'm on this road alone
The time has gone so fast

------break

Thinking back on all the years
Some good times, and some I don't recall
I feel I don't have long to go
I'm worn out, and I'm just waiting for the fall

Nothing lasts forever, you turn around the time is gone
And soon you're left wondering, if you will face another dawn
I feel I don't have long to go, it's my time, but I don't mind at all
I'm worn out, and I'm just waiting for the fall

Worn out, and just waiting for the fall

And this one, I would say tends to lean a little more toward a folk type thing - Scottish, maybe.  But again, whatever works.  Nothing is genre mandatory.  "I Turned And Saw Her Standing"

I turned and saw her standing
With a sadness in her eyes I'd never seen
We'd never been a day apart
Since we walked down the isle at seventeen

But now I have to leave her
And I saw the tears as I walked out of sight
I don't know what the future holds
I only know that I'll be missing her tonight

I didn't say goodbye to her
I only said I'll try and be back soon
And she reminded me of promises
Made one night under a lover's moon

We said we'd never leave the other's side
As long as we both lived
And it breaks my heart to leave her now
There's nothing left but promises to give

I'll be back when this is over
Is the promise that I made to her last night
And though she said she knew it
I could see she only prayed that I was right

We met when we were only ten
We laughed and played and talked of childish things
Not knowing what the future held
Not dreaming yet of what tomorrow brings

I've loved her since the day we met
Even then there was a magic in her smile
And as I walk away from her
I hope it's only for a little while

---  break

We met when we were only ten
We laughed and played and talked of childish things
Not knowing what the future held
Not dreaming yet of what tomorrow brings

Well I've loved her since the day we met
Even then there was a magic in her smile
And as I walk away from her
I hope it's only for a little while

Yes as I walk away from her

I hope it's only for a little while

So there ya go.  Come one, come all.  If either of those peak your interest and you start to feel a tune, have at it.  Can't wait to hear what they turn into...

That's a great challenge. Unfortunately I'm yet to complete a song of my own (guitar parts or otherwise). I hope someone runs with this though. Especially the second song. I like those lyrics.
scarebear.rocks - terrible guitar playing verbalised as terrible writing.

Thanks SB, hopefully someone will pick their favorite and run with it.  I almost put up 3, but I left rock out on purpose to save something for another time.  Not saying either of the two above couldn't be rock, but you know what I mean.  A lot of the time I write for a tune already done or in progress, but when I just sit down and write something dry (like the above) I usually have a tune/meter/feel running in my head.

Sometimes, though, people really surprise me with a completely different direction.  A few years back I wrote a Christmas song and put it 'out there', and a friend of mine did it in Reggae style.  I would have never thought that would work, but it ended up being one of my favorites.

Anyway, hopefully this will peak some interest.  And you shouldn't count yourself out, you never know what something like this might bring out in you.  Could be your first big hit... ;)

This is a fun idea! And something you can participate in even if you don't know how to play a guitar. That said - I pretty much lack any sort of creativity, so I'll just stand by to see what interesting things others have to say. :)

I'm so, so curious. On the "I turned and saw her standing" song, where is he going??

Off to war, DTP.  Way, way back in 'the day'.  Implied, but not actually said, just to leave a little to the listener's imagination.

But don't tell anybody else, though... ;)

And absolutely, that's the idea.  Anything anybody can contribute to the final work...
